Cybercrime, hackers, data protection… These news themes have invaded our screens for months. In business, the theme is more topical than ever. Almost half (40%) of employees admit to having data from a previous employer.

Cybercriminals are not the only ones responsible for data breaches. Employees, past and present, also represent a risk to the integrity and confidentiality of company information … and those who work there. Especially when the latter does not have an appropriate policy to protect personal data. Almost half (40%) of French employees say they have already had access to confidential information about their colleagues (salary, bonus, banking information, password, etc.). In an “accidental” way, specifies the study conducted * by Kaspersky. Either way, this was done without the consent of the person concerned.

A third of French employees (33%) admit, however, that they themselves shared valuable information with their colleagues: username and password of their professional devices in particular. So, is it a good idea or a big mistake? “The lack of control and organization of digital files, especially files hosted in the cloud, can lead to data leaks and serious security incidents,” comments Tanguy de Coatpont, CEO of Kaspersky.

Former employers also victims of the threat

Almost half (40%) of French employees even admit that they still have data from a previous employer; whether they are shared documents, online files or even emails. “It is important to put in place a data governance policy that includes the issue of access rights but also protection against cyberthreats,” adds the CEO. This is the safest way to allow employees to work efficiently, while protecting company property. ”

It would therefore be the responsibility of companies to set up efficient security systems to preserve the data of employees, colleagues who are a little too curious, even malicious. This opinion seems to be shared by the teams: only 14% of French employees think that the responsibility for managing access in the company is theirs. The latter are thus ready to give up access to data concerning their colleagues; but don’t hesitate to take a look if they can!

*The survey was conducted among 7,000 office workers working on computers in 14 countries between December 2018 and January 2019 (including 1,046 in France).
