Starting this Saturday, January 15, Spaniards can now purchase the Covid-19 antigen tests for a maximum price of 2.94 euros. A cost that was set last Thursday by the Interministerial Commission on Drug Prices and whose resolution was published yesterday in the Official State Gazette.

At the beginning of the week, Pedro Sánchez, President of the Government, already announced that a maximum price would be set for these self-diagnostic tests, which, finally, has been established at 2.94 euros.

It was announced on Thursday by the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, at the end of the meeting of the aforementioned commission. “Our main goal was stabilize supply of this type of products. Once established, we have regulated the maximum price,” he said.

triple paid

After the publication of the resolution in the BOE, the maximum cost of the Covid antigen tests set by the Government has come into force this Saturday. Until now, the Spanish have come to pay three times the price now established on average.

It should be remembered that it was at the end of July when the sale of antigen tests in pharmacies without the need for a prescription was approved. Throughout these five months, the tests have come to cost €8.7 on average, according to data provided by Iqvia to this newspaper.

It was in July when that price was reached. As regards December, the month in which demand skyrocketed, the average cost of these tests stood at 7.03 euros in the last week of 2021.

However, this amount corresponds to the average cost, the actual cost being much higher. As reported by EL ESPAÑOL-Invertia, these self-diagnosis tests have reached 12 euros per unitdue to the increase in demand.

An increase in sales that responds to the explosion of infections by the variantomicron and the proximity of the Christmas holidays. Such was the demand that there were stock problems in Spanish pharmacies, although this has already been restored.

The regulation of the price of these products was a request that had been raised from different professional sectors. However, for the opposition and pharmacists, the measure “comes late” and they ask that the antigen tests be free.

Something that is already happening in neighboring countries such as in KingdomUnited, Swiss (for close contacts or people with symptoms), Germany (the authorities offer free tests to the population on demand) or Austria (free tests are carried out in detection centers).

At the moment, in Spain they will have a maximum price of 2.94 euros. An amount thatis subject to future revisions by the Interministerial Commission on Medicine Prices, taking into account the evolution of market prices”, according to the resolution published in the BOE.
