Julio Alonso leaves Weblogs after 16 at the helm of the company he founded with his partner Anthony Ortiz. It does so two years after the group was sold to Webedia to create the largest group of thematic portals in Spain, an operation valued at ten million euros.

According to his own account Alonso on his LinkedIn, gives control of the project and management to the French media group. “Today I have to announce that, after two years of transition, I hand over control of the project to Webedia and leave the group.”

“I have nothing but words of gratitude for all those who have accompanied me on this journey of so many years. Both those who have done it from within the company, and I have been lucky enough to have an extraordinary team, and those who have done it from outside, such as partners, customers, suppliers or even competitors. Now it’s time to rest a bit, recharge the batteries and then return to the fray with new adventures”, he concluded.

As reported by Dircomfidencial Antonio Ortiz remains director of publications and Antony Dumas assumes the direction. Alonso’s departure was agreed upon in the sale of Weblogs two years ago, establishing a smooth transition process for the new owners to take over the reins of the group.

Buy in 2018

In October 2018 and after several months in the Weblogs market, editor of Xataka and another 30 specialized digital publications, found a buyer. An operation then valued at 10 million euros and which gave way to a new group (Webedia+Weblogs) with nearly 70 million unique users at the time.

The new group began to include thematic portals from areas as diverse as videogames, technology, entertainment, cinema, fashion, lifestyle, children’s and motoring, and up to 40 publications. In the case of Weblogs, they also edit Trendencias, Directo al Paladar, Genbeta, Applesfera, Vitónica, Espinof, Vidaextra, Motorpasión or Babies and More.

For its part, the French Webedia has a strong presence in key markets such as France, United States, Germany and Brazil and the purchase of Weblog is an example of his firm’s commitment to the Spanish market, after acquiring a few seasons ago 3DGamesone of the most important video game websites.

Weblogs is also one of the most relevant actors in native media in Spain. The company invoiced 5.5 million euros per year before purchase and is one of the largest receivers of publicity on-line of the sector.
