What cost in terms of hospitalizations and deaths are the anti-vaccines imposing during the sixth wave of Covid-19? It is one of the questions that the Foundation for Applied Economics Studies (Fedea) has answered. “They are responsible for 78% of ICU admissions and 32% of deaths“.
This is one of the main conclusions contained in the report ‘The evolution of the pandemic in Spain during 2021’ published by the foundation this Monday.
As detailed in the study, the starting assumption is that, in the first week of November, the entire population over 12 years of age had had access to the complete vaccination schedule, so that those not vaccinated “can be considered anti-vaccine”.
To obtain the influence of the anti-vaccines, the authors of the report have taken into account the assumption that the entire population had been vaccinated at the beginning of the sixth wave of infections and the health data actually observed.
“That is, the observed figures are compared – which include the percentage of the unvaccinated population – with respect to the case in which the entire population over 12 years of age had been vaccinated at the beginning of this wave. That difference is what is due to the anti-vaccines ”, Javier Ferri, one of the authors of the report, explained to EL ESPAÑOL-Invertia.
The result obtained is that the population reluctant to be vaccinated is responsible for increasing 44% hospitalizations in the sixth wave (79% for the group between 30 and 59 years old), 78% for ICU admissions (143% for the group between 30 and 59 years old), and 32% for deaths (53% in the age group between 30 and 59 years).
According to figures provided by Ferri to this newspaper, 13.4% of the population between 12 and 29 years old was not vaccinated at the end of December. As for the group between 30 and 59 years old, it was 11.2%. In the group between 60 and 79 years old, 2% were not vaccinated, a figure identical to that of the group over 80 years old.
Scenario without vaccines
How many infections, hospitalizations and deaths has vaccination saved? It is another of the questions to which the report published by Fedea answers. In fact, they emphasize that the positive impact of vaccination “has been extraordinary.”
And it is that, the non-availability of vaccines would have increased deaths from Covid by 571% with respect to those observed, although those under 60 years of age would only suffer 2.1% of the total increase, while those over 80 years of age would have been the main victims.
Another aspect analyzed by the report is how the sixth wave of infections has impacted Primary Care activity. The large increase in cases has even caused health centers to collapse.
Fedea analyses, specifically, how the workload has increased in the different health professionals throughout this last wave. Thus, that of doctors would have increased by around 24%, of which approximately six percentage points is due to the management of medical discharges and discharges.
In the case of nurses, the increase in workload would have been 19%. For its part, it would also have increased by more than 36% the aggregate workload of the category of Other professionals, which includes the receptionists/telephone operators and to laboratory technicians.
In the conclusions of the report, the authors warn that in order to maintain the workload of primary care personnel at pre-pandemic levels, from the beginning of the sixth wave and until January 14, 2022, would have had to be increased by more than 2 employees on average the provision of each primary care center.
